New book

The Struggle for the Tundra.

Again Oyvind Ravna has the pleasure to present a new book. Kampen om tundraen. Nenetserne og deres historie [The Struggle for the Tundra. The Nenets and their history] is published by the Nordic Sami Institute in the Dieđut series, which is the institute’s series for research, scientific and popular scientific literature. The book deals with the history and present of the Nenets, which is one of 30 indigenous peoples of the Russian Far North, Siberia and Far East. It deals with the present and the juridical status of the indigenous people as a minority group inside the Russian federation.

Even if the author has followed the standard for scientific publications, he has managed to make the dramatic history and present of the Nenets alive and readable. For people with interest for indigenous peoples and the history of the Arctic, this book is a must.
From before historical time, the Nenets and the Sami people have been neighbours and the two nations are related through language and culture. Long time adaptation to Arctic climate, makes the Nenets to the owner of probably the most specialised reindeer husbandry culture in the Northern Areas.
During many centuries, the Nenets was fighting against the Russian colonists. A fight they, as other small nations, which fight against a mighty conqueror, were judged to loose. But nearly up to nowadays, there have been riots. In the 1920ies the Soviet power came to the tundra with schools and educational programmes, but also with collectivisation, linguistic and cultural suppression.

In the book, the author focuses on this history with the little known fight against the colonists. On a fight, which is not unlike the fight of the American Indians, which fought for their land areas and way of living. He also goes into the present situation, the struggle to re-establish private reindeer husbandry, and the juridical status after Russia passed a constitutional article with aim to protect their indigenous people.
The book is made more readable through 40 illustrations and several maps, and (take away and) index and a detailed table of contents makes it easy to find what one’s looking for. The Struggle for the Tundra. The Nenets and their history, has a summary in English, Russian and Sami languge.
